Oral Motor Skills

  1. Practice lip closure by making the "p" sound by blowing a kleenex held in front of the mouth. The kleenex should move as the sound is produced.

  2. Using a straw, blow through the straw and move a cotton ball or feather across the table.

  3. Practice lip closure by "puffing" next to a cotton ball or feather to move it across the table. Have a race with a friend.

  4. Blow bubbles in a glass of water. Use voice to make "loud bubbles". Use a whisper voice to make "quiet bubbles".

  5. Blow through a straw and practice the same loud and soft sounds by making noise through the straw (with voice), or air only (without voice). This technique helps to distinguish between voiced sounds {b,d,g} and unvoiced sounds {p,t,k}.

  6. Blow a bubble off the wand then move to blowing bubbles through the wand to improve lip rounding. Teach a whispered "hoo" for tongue retraction.

  7. Tape a dixie cup sideways, lying down, to the table. Make a line with tape. Blow a ping pong ball from the line into the cup. Cotton balls are fun to try, too!

  8. Using peanut butter or honey, place item behind upper teeth to distinguish placement for the following sounds: { l, t, d, n}. Tongue tip should be used to remove peanut butter while making the target sound.

  9. To improve tongue movement, place peanut butter or honey on a spoon. Lick it off the spoon, using tongue for removal and not moving the spoon.

  10. Lick a lollipop, popsicle or ice cream cone, using tongue for movement, not the item.

  11. Hold lips together with fingers to produce /b/ or /p/ sounds. The "quiet sound" is /p/, the "loud sound" is /b/.

  12. Initiate /k/ (unvoiced) or /g/ (voiced) sounds by placing hand on throat and practicing a cough. The "quiet sound" is /k/ and the "loud sound" is /g/.

  13. Cue for production of /s/: Tongue behind teeth. Tongue touches the back of bottom teeth. Teeth together. Blow. Make a "quiet sound". To make the /z/ sound, the same cues are used, except /z/ is the "loud sound".

  14. Cue for /f/: Bite bottom lip and blow. Make a "quiet sound", using no voice.

  15. Cue for /b/ and /p/: Pop your lips "Loud sound" is /b/, "Quiet sound" is /p/.

  16. Try saying "puh - tuh - kuh". Say it slowly and then faster. How fast can you say it?

  17. "Drink" pudding, jello or applesauce through a straw. Have a contest to see who can do it the fastest. Great exercise to teach tongue retraction for production of /r/.

  18. To strengthen lips: Place a large marshmallow between your lips and squeeze it with your lips. Practice 5-10 times. Place cheerios or miniature marshmallows on a stick. Remove one at a time, using lips only. Second time, use lips and tongue combination.

  19. To reduce drooling, improve breath control and to teach voicing: Blow through a kazoo. Increase sustained effort to 10 seconds. Blow 25 times in succession to improve vocalizations and breath control.
